The Butlerian Jihad is the first book, chronologically, in the Dune saga. Written in 2002, it tells of the beginning of the empire, ten thousand years before Paul Atredies came on the scene. Mankind had mostly been conquered by intelligent machines called Titans, but a more advanced and cunning machine, called Omnius, had come along and conquered even them. Now, as mankind tries to fight back, the origins of the many of the principals in the later Dune books, the Atredies and the Harkonnen, the Fremen and the Mentats, the Suk Doctors and the Bene Gesserit, all have their origins in the battle against the thinking machines. |
