Scardown (Jenny Casey Book 2) by Elizabeth Bear
Jenny becomes a pilot on the Montreal, based on the still-unknown alien technology found on Mars. (The shuttles assigned to the Montreal are all named after Canadian folk-singers like the Gordon Lightfoot, the Leonard Cohen, and the Buffy St. Marie!) Jenny continues to have to deal with the highly complex and independent Artificial Intelligence based on the Richard Feynman personality. The Chinese drop an asteroid from orbit onto Toronto, and trigger “nuclear winter.” Earth, due to global warming, was falling apart even before that. Now, there’s an even more desperate need to send starships out to colonize another world. A fun read .
