Queen City Jazz by Katharine Ann Goonan

Verity lives on a neo-Shaker farm in a futuristic America after nanotechnology plagues have destroyed civilization.  When her community is infected, she takes her friend Blaze’s body to Cincinnati where she hopes to use nanotech to bring him back to life. 

Cincinnati is now a bizarre wonderland of nano-infected citizens trapped in repetitious fantasies based on American literature and music.  The nanotech is released through pollen from huge, engineered Flowers and spread by Bees.

Verity must figure out her unique destiny within the Hive in order to break the nano-cycle of fantasies and save Cincinnati along with Blaze. 

Well-written though dense: a desperately hard read. However, some may love it and want to continue the series .
